The Architecture of the Taj mahal: Symbolism and Design

Introduction

The architecture of the Taj Mahal is a stunning blend of Indo-Islamic and Mughal styles, known for its symmetry, intricate details, and luxurious materials. Ustad Ahmad Lahauri created the original design of the Taj Mahal. The construction materials were sourced from the finest locations, and the sheer volume of these materials was so vast that it took a fleet of over a thousand elephants to transport them to the construction site. Here’s a simple breakdown of its architectural features:

Layout and Symmetry

The Taj Mahal is designed with perfect symmetry. The entire complex is square in shape, with the main mausoleum at the center and surrounded by gardens, a mosque, a guest house, and a large reflecting pool. Symmetry symbolizes balance and harmony, which is a key feature in Islamic architecture.

The Mausoleum

The central structure of the Taj Mahal is the mausoleum, where Mumtaz Mahal, the wife of Emperor Shah Jahan, is buried. The mausoleum is built on a raised platform and has a large dome in the center. The dome is surrounded by four smaller domes, creating a beautiful visual balance. The entire mausoleum is made of white marble, giving it its radiant appearance.

The Dome

The main dome of the Taj Mahal is one of its most prominent features. It rises to a height of 35 meters (115 feet) and is surrounded by four smaller domes, called chattris. The dome is a typical feature of Mughal architecture, symbolizing the sky and the heavens.

Use of Marble and Red Sandstone

The mausoleum is made primarily of white marble, which was brought from Rajasthan and other parts of India. The use of white marble symbolizes purity and peace. For other buildings in the complex, red sandstone was used, which was a common material in Mughal architecture. The combination of these materials creates a beautiful contrast and enhances the aesthetic appeal.

The Gardens

The Taj Mahal is set within formal charbagh gardens (a Persian-style garden) divided into four parts by walkways and water channels. The gardens are designed to represent paradise, with the flowing water symbolizing the rivers of heaven. A large reflecting pool in the center mirrors the image of the Taj Mahal, enhancing its beauty.
